| Communities and REDD
Community Forestry International’s (CFI) program on climate change keeps evolving as new opportunities, regulations, and strategies emerge under the REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation). CFI’s projects are designed to create a blueprint for financially and environmentally sustainable strategies that enhance the livelihoods and forest management of the rural poor. CFI continues to be at the forefront of REDD strategies and challenges as it continues to change as new policies are formalized.
In January 2011, CFI hosted the first ARWG meeting in New Delhi, India in collaboration with TERI with funding from the Ford Foundation and DFID, India. The invitees for the first meeting came from Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Nepal, the Philippines and representatives from the UK and the USA. In July 2011, CFI began designing its second REDD project. When completed, it will be India’s first REDD project. CFI has worked in Meghalaya since 2003, working to build capacity among the indigenous Khasi. For this project, nine Khasi Kingdoms formed a Federation in order to collaborate more effectively with the design and implementation of the REDD project.
In partnership with the Forestry Administration of Cambodia and Terra Global Capital, CFI completed the first REDD project design and methodology in Cambodia in 2009. Terra Global Capital has now announced that the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS) has approved the first Mosaic REDD methodology after it successfully completed the dual validation process. The Oddar Meanchey project is being implemented by the Forestry Administration, Pact, and the local NGO Children's Development Association, with validation funding provided by the Clinton Climate Initiative of the William J. Clinton Foundation.
