PROJECT PROPOSAL

First, to describe and assess the indigenous forest-relevant institutions in the selected Hmong, Karen and lowland Thai villages in the Khun Wang sub-watershed, Mae Wang Watershed, Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand. Second, to document the interactions between villages and local RFD staff during community forestry extension activities.

To fulfill objective of description and assessment of indigenous forest relevant institutions in the selected villages, the International Forest Resources and Institutions (IFRI) protocol and Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) will be employed for baseline data collection. Surveys will take place in at least 2 Hmong, 2 Karen and 2 Thai lowland villages.

To document the interactions between villages and local RFD staff during community forestry extension activities, the investigator will join RFD - village activities as described in their proposal "Community Forestry Support Project in Mae Khan Watershed - Thailand". The project will document the process of bi-directional information flow and sharing of experiences between RFD staff and the villages. Moreover, an assessment will be made of both prospects and challenges for future collaboration between local RFD and rural villages under the future decentralization of community forestry in Thailand.

PROJECT OUTPUTS
