PROJECT PROPOSAL

In 2001, Mlup Baitong (MB) successfully embarked on an environmental radio program, with the aim of bridging the communication gap, seeking environmental justice, and advocating for the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. The project aims to provide local communities an understanding of public policies that extend greater rights and responsibilities to natural resource-dependent communities. This component of the program will focus on disseminating information regarding new participatory resource management policies through short radio programs. The radio programs will stimulate community discussions regarding new policies and foster civil society dialogue.

Mlup Baitong is one of the few local NGOs producing a radio program and its program is the only one focusing on environmental issues. The 15-minute radio program is broadcast weekly over the Women's Media Center (102 FM) and the National Radio Center of Cambodia (918 AM). It is also heard over the closed circuit system of ten pagodas of Kompong Speu province and four in Kompong Thom province. Continuation and expansion of this radio program is necessary in Cambodia to promote environmental awareness and influence attitudes and actions among the local people.

The approved activity will have the following outputs:

  • Increased knowledge of Radio Researcher, Presenter, and Producer in community natural resource rights from a legal perspective, as well as ability to communicate effectively on these issues.

  • Production of at least 8 radio programs which specifically incorporate new learning on community forestry and community fisheries policies or other relevant natural resource policy developments.

  • Increased awareness among the general population on community rights to natural resources

  • Sharing of related case study information within the region
