Board of Directors

David Reed Barker has spent more than 30 years promoting environmentally sustainable development in poor nations through partnerships among government, community groups, and businesses to conserve biological and cultural resources while increasing income and human resources. He joined Monitor International as president in 1997, and up until his retirement in 2005, led marine ecosystem conservation programs and global initiatives for the organization.

Educated as a Medical Anthropologist, he holds a Ph.D. degree awarded by the New School for Social Research in 1975. David Barker was a co-founder of Management Systems International, where he worked as a management consultant from 1981-83 and 1989-97. From 1983-89, he worked for the U.N. Food & Agriculture Organization and the U.N. Development Program. He lived in Asia for nearly 20 years, Africa and the Caribbean, and, most recently in Indonesia. He and his wife Lisa currently live aboard their boat, Gyatso, traveling up and down the eastern seaboard and the Caribbean.
